Fortunately, English Setters have few genetic diseases, especially compared to many other breeds. However, even one genetic disease is too many, and responsible breeders strive to eliminate any genetic diseases in their dogs. Obviously, this is very difficult, or perfection would have been achieved long ago. The main reason is that recessive traits are difficult to recognize in dogs that are unaffected but are carriers, and recessives are very difficult to breed out. The main genetic disorders that affect Englsih Setters are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and deafness. The following links give more information about these genetic disorders.
